Recently, allegations of human rights violations, ill-treatment, and exploitation of prisoners in an Iraqi prison have been spread through a video clip on social media, in which 12 prisoners appeared complaining of flagrant violations of their rights, financial extortion, verbal abuse, and exploitation committed by those in charge of the prison, as well as the promotion of narcotics by mafias believed to be affiliated with the prison administration AlSharqia, This was confirmed by a statement of the head of the Human Rights Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, Mr. Arshad Al-Salhi, posted on his official Twitter . Arshad Al_Salhi
NIHR, being human rights defenders, expresses its indignation at these gross violations and considers the content of the video clip, if verified, to be one of the most severe cases of human rights violations resulting from administrative corruption in the most sensitive government institutions and a clear violation of international conventions on the rights of prisoners. Our organization calls on the relevant authorities and human rights organizations to take urgent response in this regard to reduce such violations and bring the negligent to justice to hold them accountable.
